Meta Launches Twitter Rival With 3B+ Users | Can Users Transition From Twitter Without Data Breach

Within 24 hours of launch, Meta’s new “Twitter Killer” app – Threads, has crossed 50 million users. Threads is a text-based microblogging app with some of its features similar to Twitter. Meta has used its video-sharing app, Instagram’s user base of over 2.35 billion, to get instant sign-ups for Threads. 

On Friday, The Verge’s Alex Heath confirmed the app registration numbers, citing internal data from Meta. In a Threads post, he shared that the app had surpassed 48 million user registrations.

Competition Fine, Not Cheating: Says Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s lawyer Alex Spiro has written to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accusing him of “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.” 

Alex Spiro mentioned in the letter, “Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.”

Twitter has also accused Meta of hiring dozens of former employees who supposedly still have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.

Answering the claims, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said, “No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee – that’s just not a thing.”

According to NDTV, the initial publication of this letter occurred in the news outlet Semafor, and there’s no further update on the same. 

Threads have become the most formidable contender to Elon Musk-owned Twitter thus far. While numerous potential competitors have surfaced, none have managed to replace Twitter, despite its challenges. 

Threads: Growing Popularity & Concerns

Meta’s Threads was launched simultaneously on the App Store and Google Play Store last Thursday. It is important to note that the app is not available in all countries.
